A Site-Specific Art Research Project by Annabel Ludovici
at Chiesa di SS Cosma & Damiano, Giudecca, Venice, Italy
12-23 Luglio 2019

No Entry - Non Permesso: Invisible – Visible Society
A Site-Specific Art Research Project by Annabel Ludovici
at Chiesa di SS Cosma & Damiano, Giudecca, Venice, Italy
12-23 July 2019
Annabel Ludovici is a multi-disciplinary artist graduating from (UAL) Chelsea College of Arts in 2018 with an MA in Fine Art.
'No Entry - Non Permesso: Invisible - Visible Society’ marks the end of a ten-week artist-in-residency programme supported by SerenDPT. The working studio is transformed into site-specific and site-integrated immersive exhibition space at the deconsecrated church of SS Cosima and Damiano and directly overlooks the site of the Casa di Reclusione Femminile della Giudecca.
Ludovici’s practice as a multidisciplinary site-specific artist has been born out of a need to confront, by means of making physical, the experiences and difficulties of being a woman. By continuously interrogating her own socio-political position, she has sharpened her perspective of inequality and unfairness. She considers women’s fragile state from a personal position, processing uncomfortable, challenging, and sometimes painful experiences by physically ‘thinking through her hands’. Her current practice has evolved from initial explorations into the Grotesque and notions of decay and temporality. Site specificity has become integral to her practice owing to working in a wide range of settings including a former women’s refuge and an operational open prison.
Her consuming interest in socio-political issues, follows on from her 2017-2018 exploration of the former Millbank Prison, London. Foucauldian concepts of power and authority, as seen through Bentham’s panoptican, established a theoretical standpoint which currently takes her to Venice. Here she continues her exploration into the precarious nature of identity, as experienced by the ephemeral female prisoner. This is observed, researched and reflected on by Ludovici, from the position of visitor in Venice; more specifically on the island of Giudecca, where the women's prison is located.
Ludovici’s immersive practice responds to the tangible elements of site-specific and site-integrated locations, investigating the phenomena of transience and memory within the architecture of buildings. Relating to the multiple histories and traces of its occupants and uses, her practice incorporates psycho-geography, archival research, oral histories, video, drawing, painting, and installation. For Ludovici, drawing is an organic process where the human figure is fundamental as an explorative tool in the early steps of her creativity forming the framework behind the theory.
Born in London, she lives and works between Somerset (UK) and Italy.
